HIMYM: "Band or DJ", Season 8 Episode 13

Last night's 'How I Met Your Mother' gave us a little bit of reassurance: Barney and Robin make it to their wedding reception.

Prior flash-forwards have suggested that both Barney and Robin freak-out right before their wedding. There was also a suggestion that Robin would climb out the same window that Victoria climbed out of on her wedding day.

However, the flash-forward at the end of last night's episode showed Robin dancing at her wedding, and Ted casually leaning against a bar while he watched the mother (okay, the mother's hand) play the bass.

But how did we get to this point?

The episode began with Ted and Lily fighting about who would organize Barney and Robin's wedding. Lily had a binder, but Ted had a bigger binder. Lily knew a band that Robin liked, but Ted thought that Robin should have a DJ.

Now, you may think that's a serious argument (okay, you probably don't think that), but the real issue is that Barney didn't ask Robin's dad for permission to marry her. And Robin points out the gang that A) her dad is really scary and B) he's traditional.

Except...is he?

When Robin introduces Barney to her dad, her father shows up in a Hawaiian shirt with a smile on his face. He also has a new girlfriend and Facebook. Apparently he's "fun now".

However, that doesn't mean that he likes Barney. He doesn't like the fact that Barney's blonde (apparently that's not a real hair color for a grown man), and he doesn't appreciate the fact that Barney won't shoot a rabbit to prove his loyalty.

Robin wants Barney to figure out a way to get her dad's permission. But then she stumbles over his Facebook page. Apparently her father is married and he didn't even bother to tell her (let alone invite her to his wedding).

She's devastated and yells at him that she and Barney are already engaged, that she's marrying him, and that her dad is no longer invited to the wedding.

Meanwhile, Ted and Lily are still having a hard time. Turns out that wedding planning is not the only devastation in their lives. During a fight over the band (Lily called to book it, but Ted had already booked it in an attempt to keep it away from the wedding), Ted yells that Robin deserves better than a wedding band, claiming that the band will be unreliable and has slept with half the women in New York City. In other words, he's talking about Barney.

Lily then admits that sometimes she wishes she wasn't a mother. And Ted admits that he thinks that Robin should be marrying him, not Barney.

I have to point out that this is so typical of Ted. He claims that he's a terrific friend, and other people seem to have the same opinion (though really, who knows? He's the one narrating and he's clearly a pretty unreliable one). But is Ted really a good friend? It seems that each time he's making a decision he's really only doing what's best for him. Even when he's helping his friends make decisions he doesn't ask them what they want, but insists they do what he thinks is right.

Two clear examples of this come to mind: Robin moving to Japan and Robin becoming a coin flip bimbo. Both times Ted insisted that he knew what the right decision was, while Barney actually listened to Robin, contributed to the conversation, and helped her make her own decisions.

Hmm, I wonder who's a better match for Robin?

The next time Ted talks to Robin she reiterates this. Robin tells Ted that Barney got her dad to cave...he made him come and apologize to her. She said that no one has ever tried (or managed) to talk to her dad like that. Ted tells Robin he's really happy for her, and it seems like he's trying to be, but the conversation ends with him arguing with her over the fact that a DJ would be more better than a band. Has Ted really learned anything at all?

The flash-forward begins with Ted on the subway. He's talking to the Rachel Bilson character (remember his ex-girlfriend who turned out to be a lesbian?). As the show suggested years earlier, her roommate will turn out to be the mother. Ted is crowing over the fact that the band cancelled anyway and that Robin should have gone with the more reliable choice of a DJ (for a second I was concerned that this was foreshadowing a Barney/Robin split). Bilson says it must be kismet, because she just saw her old roommate that morning and she plays bass for one of the best wedding bands in NY. Ted takes some persuading, but eventually agrees that would be a good solution.

And we're back to that scene I mentioned earlier: Robin dances past Ted in her wedding dress, and Ted leans back against the bar, staring at the mother.

P.S. There's also a side-story where baby Marvin is super constipated. Which I guess could be used as an analogy for the lack of movement in Ted's life or something. I don't know, the baby poops once Ted's admitted his true feelings to Lily, so way to go writers.

Season seven of 'Dexter' was brilliant.

It may have seemed less brilliant if it weren't for the massive failures of seasons four through six, but regardless, it was a strong season.

When I first watched the seventh season I had only watched seasons one through three and part of season four. I got so frustrated after Jimmy Smits that I had to give up on the show.

But then I heard wonderful things about the seventh season and I caved. I watched it. Without watching any of the seasons inbetween.

And believe it or not that worked just fine.

Most of the back-story referenced this season took place during the first three seasons, and the major plotpoints (i.e. Rita's death) I had already learned about through watercooler conversations.

Although it wouldn't be quite as fun I think it would be relatively easy to watch season seven as a newbie without having seen any of the prior seasons. All you'd need would be minimal knowledge:

  • Dexter is a serial killer who kills guilty people when the justice system fails to put them behind bars.
Dexter played by Michael C. Hall
  • When Dexter was a child his mother was a CI for a police officer named Harry. Dexter's mother was murdered in front of him. Harry rescued Dexter from a pool of blood and decided to raise him. When it became apparent that Dexter had psychopathic tendencies Harry taught him a "code" (see above).

  • His sister is really his foster sister, her name's Deb, and she's the lieutenant of homicide.
Deb played by Jennifer Carpenter

  • Dexter works at homicide as a blood spatter analyst.

  • In Season 1 Deb was almost killed by Dexter's biological brother. He was known as the "Ice Truck Killer". He wrapped his victims in plastic mimicking Dexter's own preparations. Dexter saved Debra.

  • Dexter's wife (Rita) was killed a few years ago. They had one son, who Dexter has custody of, though the toddler (Harrison) is mainly raised by a nanny. Rita had two children (Cody and Astor) who now live with their grandparents.

  • Last season Deb realized that she might have romantic feelings for her "brother" (who's really no relation) but was disgusted by the thought.

  • In Season 2 Dexter was almost caught by a black cop named Doakes. He died trying to prove Dexter's guilt. Dexter framed him as the "Bay Harbor Butcher"...though Dexter was really the butcher.
Doakes played by Erik King

  • Doakes had a romantic relationship with LaGuerta, who is the captain of homicide.
LaGuerta played by Lauren Velez
Last season ended with Dexter's foster sister Deb walking in on him...right after he'd killed someone.

'Dexter' will be back on Showtime for an eighth and (probably) final season in June.

Horrible Things on Downton Abbey: Season 3 Episode 3

In the never-ending story of misery that is 'Downton Abbey', more horriblethings continue to happen to the Crawleyfamily.

Season 3, Episode 3*:

Branson shows up at Downton. He’s sopping wet and he’s interruptingdinner, so clearly it’s a massive inconvenience.
Apparently back in Irelandthe estate of a wealthy family was burned to the ground (wait a minute…how didhe get to sort-of-rural Englandso quickly? This is 1920, is that even possible?) (I Googled. Apparently it’ssort of possible).
It’s hard to tell what makes the Crawley family angrier: thefact that Branson may have committed arson or the fact that he left Sybil in Ireland.
Nope. Never mind. It’s now clear.
They’re more upset about the Sybil thing.
Her pregnancy seems to be an afterthought, Lord Branson ismore concerned that she’s in a “foreign” country (not like they speak Englishor anything) and that she’s a woman.
(You’ll be pleased to know that Sybil is safe. For now. Godknows with this show).
Robert uses his political know-how (aka his money) andmanages to keep Branson out of prison…provided he never goes to Ireland again. Branson(in case you haven’t picked this up from the last two years of “Irish Pride!”) isnot happy.
Meanwhile Anna isn’t getting any letters from Bates, Bates isn’tgetting any letters from Anna, and they aren’t allowed to visit with each other.Neither of them is happy. In fact, the only person who’s happy in this scenariois the psycho bunk-mate who somehow orchestrated this whole thing.
Ethel lets baby Charlie go and live with his grandparents. Unfortunatelysaid grandparents include that total asshole grandfather. I’d say Charlie wasbetter off with Ethel, except she’s working as a prostitute now, and I’m a tadconcerned about where she stashes Charlie while she’s working. So, Ethel saysgoodbye for the sake of her child and is subsequently miserable.
Daisy is unhappy because there’s a new (more attractive) kitchenmaid named Ivy. Alfred is unhappy because there’s a new (more attractive)footman named Jimmy.
Edith is unhappy because women don’t have the right to vote,so she writes a letter to a newspaper.
And that's today's update of 'Horrible Things on DowntonAbbey'.
bye bye Charlie

*In a rather odd move, PBS isairing the episodes differently than the UKdid…for this reason episode 3 in the States was aired as episode 4 in England.

Horrible Things on Downton Abbey: Season 3 Episode 4

In the never-ending story of misery that is 'Downton Abbey', more horrible things continue to happen to the Crawley family.

Season 3, Episode 4:

Edith is briefly happy again because the newspaper liked her writing. In fact, they liked it so much they want her to write a regular column. Of course, her happiness is short-lived because once again her family thinks that any idea of Edith's is bound to be a stupid one.

Matthew finds out Lord Grantham is bad with money (big surprise there, didn't he almost lose the estate last week?). Robert is not happy that Matthew is meddling. Mary is not happy that Matthew is meddling. No one is very happy this week.

Lord Grantham (I suppose we know him well enough to call him Robert?) wants a fancy baby doctor, so he brings Sir Philip from London. Sir Philip is kind of a pompous know-it-all. It's almost bad enough that we start to feel sorry for last season's pompous know-it-all Dr. Clarkson.

Dr. C points out that Sybil probably has preeclampsia. But Robert ignores him and listens to the titled guy. Cora is not very happy.

Then she's even less happy.

Sybil dies in childbirth.

(Continuing the 'Downton' trend of people appearing to be fine after a health scare, then dying 5 minutes later while the entire family is in the room. *cough*Lavinia*cough*).

Cora blames Robert.

Ethel gives up baby Charlie to that horrible man who yelled at her last season. She knows he'll get a better life that way. I would argue with that (considering how horrible that man is) but then I remember that Ethel's working as a prostitute and where the hell does Charlie go while that's happening?

And that's today's update of 'Horrible Things on Downton Abbey'.

Let me say some things before I die.

Horrible Things on Downton Abbey: Season 3 Episode 5

In the never-ending story of misery that is 'Downton Abbey', more horrible things continue to happen to the Crawley family.

Season 3, Episode 5:

Branson wants to name the baby after his dead wife. Lord Grantham is not amused. Branson wants to baptize the baby as a Catholic. Lord Grantham is not amused.

Mary supports Branson on both these points and Lord Grantham agrees. That should not be taken as a sign that he is amused. He's not.

Cora still blames Robert for Sybil's death. Probably because if he wasn't such a patriarch who's into titles his daughter would still be alive. But, you know, Violet's right, it's not his fault at all.

Violet "fixes" things by getting Dr. C to admit that Sybil's chances of survival would have been slim even with his recommended c-section.

Cora cries. Robert cries. They hug, but not joyfully. (This is, after all, 'Downton Abbey').

Anna finds evidence that Bates is innocent. Bate's psycho bunk-mate figures this out and pays the witness to lie. Bates is almost screwed. But then he shows off some stellar intimidation tactics. Who knew he was so skilled? (Also, why isn't he limping more when he walks in a circle around that prison courtyard? Has being incarcerated magically healed his leg?)

Lord Grantham yells at Ethel because she used to be a prostitute and now she's cooking for Mrs. Crawley and how dare she be around his wife and daughters.

Robert is also still pissed at Matthew (probably because Matthew is smarter than him). Lord Grantham is really not being shown in the best light this season.

And that's today's update of 'Horrible Things on Downton Abbey'.

I may not have my innocence, but at least I finally got these goddamn letters.

'Bones': Season 8, New Tonight. Premiere.

To contact us Click HERE
'Bones' is back! The show's eighth season is premiering tonight on FOX at 8/7 C.

FOX's decision to have it's shows return a week earlier than most other networks may be one of their smartest moves yet. Monday nights are going to be a tough crowd this year...'How I Met Your Mother' and 'Dancing with the Stars' will be 'Bones' main competition in the same time-slot.

'Castle', a show which attracts the same type as viewers as 'Bones', had a strong season last year. Arguably last season was one of 'Bones' weakest. There was a combination of:

a shortened season (due to Emily Deschanel's pregnancy)

writing said pregnancy into the series (meaning fewer case investigation with the show's lead duo)

a decrease in chemistry between the two main characters (unclear if this is because Deschanel and Boreanaz can play subtext better than they can play main text)

'Castle', meanwhile, offered:

a moving PTSD episode (leading to a PRISM award win by Katic and Huertas)

a rift between it's two main characters (which only lead fans to want them to get together more)

further investigation into the murder which propels the series (that of Beckett's mother)

a coupling of the show's main characters that was intense and steamy (proving that Fillion and Katic can do main text as well as they can do subtext)

If fans of both shows are going to choose only one series to watch this season, it's probably going to be 'Castle'. Because of that, it makes perfect sense to start airing episodes of 'Bones' tonight (a full week before the premiere of 'Castle'). If the season opener of 'Bones' is strong enough, it may sway some of the audience toward watching 'Bones' live each week, and leaving 'Castle' the the DVR.

The premiere episode of 'Bones' promises a couple of things: a blonde Brennan, a pissed-off Booth, a reveal of which members of the gang have been aiding fugitive Brennan, and a reunion.

Grey's Anatomy S9Ep1: Going Going Gone Recap

'Grey's Anatomy' is back in an episode that's as good as it is confusing.

As a quick reminder, last season ended with a bang. Literally. A plane carrying a team of doctors that included Meredith, Cristina, Derek, Mark, Lexie, and Arizona crashed. In the sob filled finale, Lexie died while pinned under the plane. Cristina injured her arm, Arizona was bleeding badly from her leg, Derek had a damaged hand, and Mark had some serious internal injuries.

You'd expect the premiere episode to pick up right after the crash, but instead the episode leapt several months ahead.

This leap was clearly done to increase the suspense throughout the episode: the viewer didn't know who had lived/who had died, and how each person was impacted. Unfortunately, it also made the episode slightly confusing. There's a thin line between being intrigued and being irritated. Luckily, this episode verged on the intriguing side.

The episode was intercut with numerous home video style flashbacks. The first one was filming Derek and Mark getting ready for Derek's first wedding. As with the rest of the videos, it featured Sloane prominently. This foreshadowed things to come.

We see a timid intern trying to avoid her mean resident nicknamed "Medusa". As the intern slowly approaches Meredith and Bailey, it is clear that Meredith is the resident in the question.

Meredith as a mean resident? It actually makes a lot of sense. Regardless of how the plane crash impacted her, Meredith was trained by Bailey...and they called her 'The Nazi' in the first two season's of the show.

Derek is back in the hospital dressed in scrubs. This alleviates our concern that he'd never be able to perform surgery again. Except it turns out that although he has been cleared for surgery he has yet to perform a single operation. He's nervous about his hand clenching at a crucial moment. Having hand seizures while said hand is inside someone's brain probably isn't the safest.

But today he wants to perform his first surgery. Callie asks him if he's sure he want to do it today of all days, but he insists that he needs it. What is so big about today?

When he walks into the surgery Callie is standing there along with the other surgical staff and they give him a standing ovation. Despite the fact that he says that "it's a wonderful day to save lives" Derek finds himself unable to complete the surgery. His hand shakes--whether it's mental or physical remains to be seen.

Alex is back to his Season One ways; he's making out with random interns in the supply closets. It seems he has delayed going to Hopkins because he has been covering Peds. Arizona is apparently gone. We don't know what's going on: Is she dead? Has she had a nervous breakdown?

Bailey's boyfriend has left to attend his out of state medical program but he is visiting her a lot. And they're having sex. A lot. She seems really happy. So happy in fact, that Webber admits to her that she is no longer called 'The Nazi'. She has a new--less scary--nickname. She begs him to tell her what it is, but he awkwardly refuses. Seems like the ex-Chief is still afraid of the wrath of Bailey.

Everyone at the hospital keeps on mentioning 5 o'clock as though something major is happening at that time. As soon as the camera pans to Mark Sloane lying on a hospital bed, attached to numerous wires and monitors, it's clear that the 5 o'clock deadline has to do with him. Sloane is in a coma and based on his wishes he doesn't want to be kept on life support for more than 30 days. The 30 days are up at 5 o'clock and the doctors realize the severity of that situation: at 5 o'clock Mark Sloane will die.

Cristina is now at her new job in Minnesota and it's clear she's not happy. Despite her displeasure with her supervisors and the climate, even Cristina is aware that 5 o'clock is approaching. Despite the fact that she and Meredith talk often via video conference it's soon clear that they have yet to visit each other. Presumably because they've both terrified of flying after the plane crash.

Although Callie wasn't in the plane crash it is clear she has been emotionally impacted as well. She is trying to hold it together--even going so far as sitting at Sloane's bedside and joking that she's taking her top off (in hopes of snapping him out of the coma). However, she breaks a couple of times during the episode. Her tension is evident when Owen introduces her to the new Peds surgery resident (Dr. Barnett) who is "replacing" Arizona. Does that mean she actually died in the crash?

It's especially heartbreaking when minutes later we see Callie crouched in a supply closet sobbing. Is she crying because Arizona is dead? In the middle of her emotional breakdown the supply closet door swings open and Alex pushes an intern inside. They begin making out but stop abruptly when they catch sight of Callie. She screams at them to "get out!". The intern promptly leaves, but Alex hovers in the doorway. Callie continues to order him "out" but instead he closes the door and leans against it. Alex may have reverted to some of his old ways, but he isn't the jerk he once was. He still cares about his friends.

Dr. Webber prepares to turn off Sloane's life support while Callie and Derek watch. Although it makes one wonder if Sloane has no other family, it is certainly true that Callie and Derek are the closest things to family he has at the hospital. Except for Lexie that is.

In an incredibly sad flashback, we see a home movie shot at Callie and Arizona's wedding. The videographer asks Sloane who he thinks he'll be with when he's old and grey. He admits he doesn't think he'll be with anyone, but if there is one person he's with it would be Lexie Grey. Since Lexie died in the plane crash and Sloane is about to die this statement is all the more powerful.

As Mark is dying his friends and colleagues gather close. While Callie and Derek are the only ones in the actual room, Bailey and her boyfriend, Webber, Alex and Meredith all gather close. The horribly depressing scene is briefly interrupted by a slightly comedic moment. Bailey, who has been trying to find out her new nickname for most of the episode, is abruptly told by Alex that her new nickname is BCB, or Booty Call Bailey due to the excitement (and copious amounts of sex) she experiences when her boyfriend visits.

Meredith can't deal with the stress of waiting for Mark's death. She announces that she's going to see Cristina and rushes out of the hospital.

At the airport Meredith catches a glimpse of Alex and gets his attention. She's mad at him because he's leaving without saying good bye to her. He yells that he can't stick around just because everyone else is leaving and she doesn't want to be alone. As Alex heads to his plane he catches sight of Owen.

Meredith gets on the plane, but freaks out just as it is getting ready to takeoff. It is clear that she is having flashbacks to the crash.

Back in Joe's bar Meredith calls Cristina over her iPad. They both takes shots together, states apart but facing each other as always. Meredith is shocked when Alex sits down next to her. He admits that he couldn't get on his plane and that he's not leaving. He asks Cristina to tell Owen that he wants his job back. He tells her that he saw Owen at the airport and assumes that Owen's coming to visit her--

But he isn't. We see April working at her family's pig farm. Owen approaches and tells her that she has her job back. He said he's made too many bad decisions and lost too many people. He wants her back at the hospital.

Callie walks into her apartment, devastated after Mark's death. She opens the door to a bedroom and we see Arizona, lying in bed, her back facing the door. Callie tells Arizona that she needs to "snap out of it" and reminds her that their daughter just lost a father, and Callie just lost her best friend. Arizona turns around and yells at Callie that she can't forgive her because she cut off her leg. She yanks back the blanket and we see that one of Arizona's legs has been amputated.

And the episode ends.

The entire episode is relatively sob inducing. Sloane's death and the devastation of his friends is heartbreaking to watch. Discovering Arizona's amputation at the very end of the episode makes the whole thing even more anxiety provoking.

Side notes: We're introduced to some new members of the cast. It seems clear that two interns, Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) and Heather (Tina Majorino) will become central this season. The first appendectomy, designed to be failed by a weak intern (remember George's experience in Season One of 'Grey's'?), was performed by Dr. Wilson. This made her the most central new cast member of this episode.

Say Goodbye to Mark Sloane & Lexie Grey
